I wore my Business Leader of the Year medal like a noose,” admits Ray Martin (Linkedin)

He stood on stages around the world, his heart sinking in private. He earned every accolade, but he realized that each one tightened the cage around him. His divorce and grief remained hidden behind flashing cameras and applause. Only when he sold his company and shed his possessions did the walls start to crumble.

In this episode we shine a light on the one question that set him free.

So what was the ONE question?

Ray Martin’s fall was as dramatic as his rise.

After decades of relentless drive, he stood on the world’s biggest stages clutching trophies while inside he felt hollow. He had built a life that every aspiring leader dreams of.

Power. Prestige. Profit.

Yet behind closed doors, his world was unraveling.

He first sensed the crack during a high-profile industry gala. Cameras flashed. Executives toasted his record-breaking quarter. He smiled for the camera while accepting the Business Leader of the Year award.

You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.

Ray Martin

That night he went home to an empty house.

His wife had moved out, and on top of that, his father died. As a result, he locked himself in the study and didn't come out for days.

In that solitude, Ray confronted the blueprint he had followed since age eighteen.

Get excellent grades. Climb the corporate ladder. Launch a startup. Scale it. Sell it. Repeat.

He realized success had become the question he obsessed over. He had never stopped to ask whether he was chasing the right thing.

Over the next twelve months he sank into grief and isolation.

He describes it now as living in a prison of his own making. He kept a daily journal but buried the pages in a drawer. He threw himself into work to escape the pain. He delivered keynote speeches about resilience while feeling defeated on the inside.

So here it is—the one question that finally set him free:

“What do I truly want to save my life for?”

The Pivotal Moment

Then came the breaking point.

He sold his London house and emptied or gave away nearly everything he owned, forcing himself through four months of stripping his life down to a single backpack of clothes and his laptop .

A friend urged him to take a six-month sabbatical to seek new insight.

He left for Asia, spending weeks in mindfulness retreats, including a ten-day Vipassana course that silenced the critic inside his head, and then extended his journey to immerse himself in purposeful action  .

In his fifties, he ran five marathons to raise over $50,000 for an elephant sanctuary in Thailand and an orphanage in Nepal. He ultimately lived out of that backpack for fourteen years before returning to the UK in 2019.

His moment of clarity came when he read The Top Five Regrets of the Dying and later encountered the line, “You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore,” which crystallized his purpose: connection, not conquest; values, not vanity.

On his return, he wrote his book, "Life Without a Tie," and launched a coaching practice, guiding leaders to integrate mindfulness and purpose into their work.

For Ray, true freedom now means living by inner values rather than external accolades.

The biggest Mistakes

Mistake 1—Chasing external validation

Most leaders measure success by trophies, not fulfillment. They collect accolades while neglecting their inner voice. That voice is often the only compass pointing toward true north.

Mistake 2 – Ignoring grief and loss

Unprocessed pain will sabotage every victory. Ignoring tough emotions creates cracks that grow into chasms. Address your wounds before they define your story.

Mistake 3—Building life around roles, not values

A CEO title or corner office can feel safe until it locks you in. If you build your identity on a job or a brand, you lose flexibility when that role changes. Anchor on core values instead.

Lessons That Set You Free

Lesson 1—Ask the right question every morning

Start with What matters today, not What did I achieve yesterday?

Lesson 2—Embrace radical simplification

Declutter schedules and possessions until only what sparks joy remains.

Lesson 3—Invest in soul care

Daily reflections, honest journaling, and meaningful rituals heal faster than any trophy can mend.

Lesson 4—Design for connection

Build relationships that outlast your career and cultivate communities that uplift your spirit.

Ray's journey serves as a reminder that even the most prestigious ladder can encounter obstacles. His story teaches that the greatest victory is discovering freedom within. If you feel trapped by your triumphs, it may be time to ask a new question.

It guides you towards undiscovered oceans.
